The castle in its present form was built in the twelfth century and was Pisan possession for a long time, constituting a real impregnable stronghold until 1402 when Pisa was conquered by the Florentines. This place was the center of a complex defense system scattered on the surrounding area, including other fortresses and towers that communicated to view each other with sheets, ropes, banners and bows interlocuendo with a secret code that only few knew.

The Florentines destroyed the fortress after he had to regain it in 1503 following an uprising of Pisa, which still involved the castle, nevertheless it was not abandoned but restored six years later
