The Church of St. Augustine in Montepulciano

Founded in 1285, it was completely renovated in the fifteenth century, with the intervention of Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for the realization of the lower part of the façade, punctuated by fluted pilasters, surmounted by niches that frame the portal, in which bezel is a terracotta relief with Our Lady and the Saints John the Baptist and Augustine.

It was later realized I restorations in 1784-1791 that affected the upper part of the facade have modified the original plant, which remains the only aisle.

Inside, a "Resurrection of Lazarus" by Alessandro Allori, a "St. Nicholas of Tolentino" by Giovanni di Paolo, a "Crucifix" polychrome wooden Antonio da Sangallo, one of Lorenzo "Crucifixion" di Credi.

The Opera, the Fraternity and the beginning of the Factory

You can take it for certain as the date of commencement of works 1285 by virtue of the fact that it is confirmed by additional manuscripts which report the incident.

The conclusion of the work in the sixteenth century

In 1440, they stopped work, the church was almost completed except for the upper part of the facade.

In the tympanum is the emblem of the Opera and Fraternity, with the previously reported incision, which attests to 1509 the term of the facade works.

Recently it was assumed that the 'Florentine architect was Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, whose presence is documented in Montepulciano in the same month of 1512 due to renovation works of the city walls. It is certain the paternity of Sangallo with regard to projects of the three chapels were built in the northern wall of the church.

Stylistically, the work is of great quality: notable is the spatial setting and worth a visit and enjoy some of the pleasures of a pleasant stay on a farm.
