Morrona's Abbey

Treasures of unknown Tuscany

6 April 2015 / Welcome and Tourism

Among the treasures not much known of Tuscany stands the Badia, or Abbey of Morrona, founded by Count Hugh Gherardesca,  in 1089. three decades later the Count donated to the monks Camaldolese the church and the monastery. The monks  preserved the property of 'Abbey and its territories until the year 1482, when ,with an act of military force, the vicar of the Bishop of Volterra, Bartolomeo Soderini, heading  200 armed mercenaries, besieged the Abbey and took possession of it on behalf of the Bishop . The abbey houses a air of mysticism and peace thanks to its location nestled in the hills of the Valdera and the isolation it enjoys. Remarkable is the church that existed before the abbey. Now privately owned and home to a renowned winery can be visited on request.
