Parish church of Saints Ippolito and Cassiano San Casciano in PISA
The church of San Casciano in Settimo was rebuilt in the twelfth century on the basis of an existing church dedicated to the saints, of which we have documentary evidence since 970.
The church was built with blocks of verrucano in Pisan Romanesque style, it has basilical plant with three naves.
The project the construction and the sculptural decorations are attributed to the famous in his time Biduino, thanks to the discovery of works signed by him.
This is the only parish church of the territory that outside presents sculptures of bestiary. Outdoor decorations formed of lions with prey and the three lintels are of exquisite workmanship and represent scenes from the life of Jesus.
Inside the church, is of great value a glazed terracotta by Della Robbia school depicting the baptism of Jesus
basilical plant and the façade, are calling architectural solutions introduced by Buschetto in design of the more famous Duomo of Pisa. The main facade is scanned in five blind arches containing oculi, inlays, lozenge decorations and three portals of entry.
Not much known and neglected by the mass, the parish church of San Casciano is however one of the most important monuments of Pisan Romanesque.
