Short trips to the discovery of forgotten treasures: Abbey of S. Savino,

Starting from Pisa to Florence, leaving the highways , and driving along the ancient Via Tosco Romagna you can see places and works of art that are not always listed on the most known travel guides  but they have a great story and a great charm and beauty.

At 5 km away from the popular and well known Miracles Square in Pisa , stands the ancient Abbey of S. Savino, one of the first monuments of Pisa’s country , once swampy and unhealthy because of the frequent flooding of the river Arno.

The Abbey, which stands on an ancient river dune called "Montione", preserves a simple and beautiful Romanesque church and a monastery plant which is today difficult to read because of uncontrolled transformations undergone by the abbey which in time was used as a residential dwelling.

Therefore are readable the signs of an important past as the old well in the middle of a cloister, now destroyed, and warehouses grain dug in the ground below the ancient floor of the small village.

Recent works of recovery bring into clear showing signs of a past that had a fundamental importance to the time of contention between the Republic of Pisa and Florence which culminated in the Battle of Cascina, when John Hawkwood defeated by the Florentines took refuge with his English knights in the Abbey, at this time fortified.
