The fresco at first was made in the old country church Santa Maria in Silvis , actually renamed Santa Maria di Momentana , situated in the hill town of Monterchi .
Piero della Francesca painted it in few days, using first-rate colors, including “blu oltremare” obtained by lapis lazuli imported from middle east by Venice’s merchants .
