12 March 2015 / Welcome and Tourism

Caravaggio painted two versions of Medusa, the first in 1596 and the other presumably in 1597.

The Shield with Medusa's head was painted in 1597 by an Italian Painter Michelangelo Merisi called Il Caravaggio .This masterpiece is housed in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence.

The legend said that this monstrous head changed men into stones. The realism of this painting has to be seen in the cut head screaming and the pathos of the expression are increased by the contorting and wavy serpents around the head.

Cardinal del Monte gave this painting to Grand Duke Ferdinando de Medici in 1598 in Florence
